Ruling on Appearing on Channels That Platform People of Innovation, and the Conditions for Debating Themحكم الظهور في القنوات التي يظهر فيها أهل البدع وضوابط مناظرتهم
Questioner: What is the ruling on students of knowledge and those keen to support the truth appearing on satellite channels that are not known for being sound, and on which people of innovation frequently appear? The Salaf were known to forbid initiating public debate with the people of innovation in front of the common people — should we then say it is better to appear publicly, for instance opposite the Rafidah, so that people may know the corruption of their doctrines, or is it better to remain upon what our forebears practiced?
This is an important question, and in truth we have already discussed it, at length, without being asked, on the subject of public debates and the harm they cause to the common people, and we explained the position of the Salaf regarding open debate and their position on the common people attending such debates. This, however, is a related but separate ruling. We must indeed debate the people of innovation, but this is not something every person is fit to undertake; it should only be undertaken by a group of scholars known for their religion, knowledge, scrupulousness, quickness of recall, and firmness of heart. A man may possess knowledge yet lack the quickness of recall and presence of mind needed; such a person should not be put forward to debate the people of innovation, for this may bring disgrace upon Ahl al-Sunnah. Not everyone is fit to explain, and not everyone is fit to debate at all — this is not from cowardice or evasion of the truth or of the innovators, but because putting forward an unqualified person may raise the innovators' standing and give them an opportunity to display their innovation.
The Prophet ﷺ said to 'A'ishah, in the hadith in the Sahihayn, "O 'A'ishah, when you see those who follow what is ambiguous in it, then be wary of them, for they are the ones Allah has named" — the Prophet ﷺ said "be wary of them," not "debate them." When the trial of the Khawarij arose in the time of the Companions, not everyone undertook to debate them; only a small number did so, among them Ibn 'Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him. And when Subaygh appeared before Amir al-Mu'minin 'Umar, questioning people about the ambiguous verses of the Qur'an, 'Umar did not see fit to debate him, considering him too insignificant to be debated and not one who sought the truth or genuinely wished to arrive at what is correct — he would merely raise questions before people that were designed to stir confusion in their minds. So 'Umar had him beaten with the whip until his wounds bled and his heart was chastened, striking him on the head until he bled, and banished him to Iraq. The story of Subaygh with 'Umar has come by chains that are open to discussion, but it is also related with a chain meeting the standard of the two Sahihs, from Ibn 'Abbas, that a man began asking about the spoils of war (al-anfal), and people would answer him, until they said to him, "Do you want us to do to you what al-Siddiq [Abu Bakr] did to Sabigh?" — indicating that this story of Sabigh is indeed authentic; this chain, on the standard of the two Sahihs, from Ibn 'Abbas, is cited in support of the story's authenticity, and it is mentioned along different routes in Ibn Kathir's Tafsir, under the verse "They ask you about the spoils of war."
Public debates of this kind carry a measure of benefit alongside considerable harm. Their benefit is that they expose and unmask such people, showing what their doctrines and ideas truly are. But among their many harms: that the common people take such open exposure as license, without themselves possessing the scholarly immunity that would protect them, and the layman should not be given such license, since this may open the door for innovation to creep into their hearts — and who is there to draw it back out again? In addition, the representative debater of Ahl al-Sunnah may fall short in his knowledge of certain issues, since on live broadcast a point of confusion may arise for which he cannot recall the proof in the moment, though he might recall it later, and he may fail to answer it well, though he might answer it well at another time — and this becomes a source of harm and confusion (fitnah) for others. This is among the reasons debates of this kind are to be avoided. Secondly, some debaters shift to matters that are not fundamental, unrelated to the core principles — as if the difference between us and such people concerned only the ruling on mut'ah marriage or love for the Ahl al-Bayt and related matters. In truth, we differ from these people over the greatest and gravest principles, matters by which one is not even a Muslim to begin with, such as shirk (associating partners) with Allah — they have shirk among them, circumambulation of graves, calling upon the dead for help; and some among their factions believe that the Qur'an has been altered, that the true, unaltered Qur'an is instead found with them, in the so-called "Mushaf of Fatimah." They declare disbelief upon all the Companions from the Muhajirin and the Ansar and those present at the Pledge of al-Ridwan, except for the Ahl al-Bayt, Salman, al-Miqdad, and a small handful of the Companions — the rest, including Abu Bakr, 'Umar, and 'Uthman, they consider disbelievers in their creed, cursing and reviling them, and some even declare disbelief upon whoever does not declare them disbelievers. They do not affirm the Names and Attributes of Allah — this too is a foundational matter — whereas among the Rafidah there are also those who do affirm Allah's Names and Attributes; some of them are determinists (Jabriyyah) on the question of divine decree, and on matters of faith (iman) they resemble the Khawarij who fought the Companions, yet hold deferred (Murji'ite) positions on other matters of faith. These great foundational matters are not what get raised on the ground when the two sides meet to discuss the doctrines involved.
Ibn al-Qayyim says, in the introduction to Madarij al-Salikin, that there has never been a war between the Muslims and the disbelievers but that their sympathies lay with the Jews and the Christians against the Muslims. And in our own age, there is no war between the Crusaders and our Muslim brethren but that we see their sympathies, support, and backing given to the Crusaders against the Muslims. These are matters of tremendous, foundational importance that are simply not raised in such debates — so how can we debate such people over a juristic question like mut'ah, or over the question of love for the Ahl al-Bayt — important as it is, it does not compare to the fundamental matters that are left unaddressed. This is a cause of great confusion among the common people, when in reality our disagreement with them is not confined to minor matters; we do not meet with them on foundational questions, and can never come together with them at all in these matters — they oppose us in the very foundations, they oppose us on Tawhid al-Rububiyyah, attributing knowledge of the unseen to the Ahl al-Bayt; they oppose us on Tawhid al-Uluhiyyah, circumambulating graves, with the greatest circumambulation given to the tomb over the House itself; and they oppose us in Tawhid al-Asma' wa'l-Sifat, for they do not affirm Allah's Names or His Attributes. They oppose us in every category of Tawhid — how, then, can we and they ever meet?
Public debates, therefore, have conditions. First, that it be undertaken by a scholar. Second, that he be characterized by breadth of memorization and comprehensive knowledge of the subject he is debating. Third, that he possess quickness of recall. Fourth, that he be firm and unafraid of his opponent. Fifth, that this not be done publicly except within a gathering of scholars and people of knowledge, rather than before the common people, in whose hearts doubts might otherwise take hold. And if a public debate must occur, then the common people should be warned against attending and watching it, for this could harm them, and doubt is a snare — how many an innovation has settled in the heart of a person and destroyed him from within! No one is safe from what may befall his own heart, for the Prophet ﷺ said — a hadith agreed upon — "Whoever exposes himself to trials will be consumed by them." And in Sunan Abi Dawud, with a strong chain, from the hadith of 'Imran, the Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever hears of the Dajjal, let him keep away from him, for by the One in Whose Hand is my soul, a man will approach him thinking himself a believer, only to follow him" on account of the doubts he carries. This is evidence that a person should keep away from places of trial and doubt, so that nothing of it settles in his heart. As al-Sufyani said, "I was not told, 'Go and watch,'" nor to go and see what his condition or state is — this benefit belongs to only a select few, not to everyone; the Prophet ﷺ forbade this for the common people, though there was one man whom the Prophet ﷺ did not reproach when he came to him and interrogated him directly and thoroughly, and the Prophet ﷺ said, "You have only increased my certainty of you" — but this concerns a particular class of people, not the general public. By the One in Whose Hand is my soul, a man will think himself a believer and yet follow him, on account of the doubts he carries.
As for appearing on media more generally, this varies from person to person; but as regards channels known for indecency, spreading doubts among Muslims, and innovation and misguidance, and which include musical segments and the like, a person should never appear on them at all — one is forbidden from that, because there is a kind of endorsement in it. If a programme opens with music, closes with music, and in between features someone saying "Allah said" and "His Messenger said," followed by a programme that features "Satan said" and "so-and-so said," this creates confusion and misleads people, casting doubt in their minds as to which one is being endorsed by association. As for channels described as "Islamic," despite whatever other shortcomings they may have, a person may go on them to proclaim the truth and make clear what is right, and this is a matter of individual judgment (ijtihad). There are now many means by which a person can convey the religion of Allah without needing such platforms at all. After the emergence of Twitter and similar platforms, one can convey the message without being tied to anyone — meaning that a person might record a lecture, whether filmed or not, and circulate it among people, without being affiliated with any satellite channel, such that he is not seen as belonging to it. We see some people today who have bought equipment matching what these channels use, and who sit in their own homes — a person can convey the religion of Allah without any affiliation to others or being reckoned as belonging to them. This is especially important now that factions and parties have come to lead people toward their own particular ways.
