The Authentic Supplications in the Funeral Prayer

Questioner: (audio unclear) O Shaykh, what is authentic regarding the supplication in the funeral prayer? The supplication for the deceased (audio unclear) — or is there an authentic hadith?

Many hadiths have come regarding the supplication in the funeral prayer. You say the opening takbir (takbirat al-ihram), then recite al-Fatihah (audio unclear: "with" or "without" the opening supplication) according to the correct view. You say the second takbir, then send blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ with the Abrahamic prayer (al-salah al-Ibrahimiyyah). Then you say the third takbir and supplicate.

Many supplications have come here. Among them is the well-known hadith, the hadith of Abu Hurayrah: "O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, those of us present and those absent, our young and our old, our males (audio unclear). O Allah, whomever You keep alive, keep him alive upon Islam, and whomever You take, take him upon faith." This was recorded by the compilers of the Sunan, and it is defective (ma'lul) — this was recorded by the compilers of the Sunan, and it is defective — as Abu Hatim, may Allah the Exalted have mercy on him, explained its defect in al-'Ilal: it is defective due to being mursal.

Also [in this chapter] is the other hadith, the hadith of 'Awf ibn Malik in the Sahih of Imam Muslim: "O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, pardon him and excuse him, (audio unclear) his entry; wash him with water, snow, and hail, and cleanse him of sins and errors as (audio unclear). O Allah, give him in exchange a home better than his home, and a spouse better than (audio unclear)" — to the end of the hadith. This is in the Sahih of Imam Muslim, and it is the most authentic thing reported on this subject.

Among them also is the hadith of Wathilah, recorded by Abu Dawud: "O Allah, Your servant, the son of Your servant, is in Your bond and Your protection." This hadith is acceptable (la ba'sa bih) — this hadith is acceptable. Abu Dawud, may Allah the Exalted have mercy on him, recorded it in his Sunan, and the like of it is said to be a good (jayyid) hadith, meaning accepted and sound, even if (audio unclear) in the lowest grades of soundness.

And he may supplicate with whatever he likes, for supplication in the funeral prayer is not restricted to what is textually prescribed (tawqifi). So he may supplicate with whatever he likes, and make the supplication sincerely for the deceased.
