The Hadith "Give Glad Tidings to Those Who Walk to the Mosques in Darkness"حديث: بشّر المشّائين في الظُّلَم إلى المساجد

Questioner: The hadith, "Give glad tidings to those who walk in darkness of complete light"?

This is a weak hadith. It has several chains, and all of them are defective ('mu'allal'); nothing of it is authentic. But in general, the meaning is sound — without specifying the particular reward named. For when these people go to the mosques in darkness, what has driven them to do so is faith, God-consciousness, and fear of the Lord, Majestic and Exalted is He, so for that they will have an immense reward and a great recompense. The Prophet ﷺ [said], "You will not take a step toward the mosque except that Allah will record for you a good deed by it and remove from you a sin by it," and the return is included in this reward and this recompense.

This reward increases and this recompense becomes greater on Friday, as in the Sunan of Abu Dawud from the hadith of Aws ibn Aws al-Thaqafi, that the Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever washes and bathes, goes early and arrives early, walks and does not ride, draws near to the imam, listens attentively and does not engage in idle talk, will have for every step the deed of a year — the reward of its fasting and its night prayer." This is evidence of the general reward that follows from going to the mosques. And if there is darkness along the way, the reward is greater still, because of the fears that come with the presence of darkness.
