Ibn al-Qayyim's Position on the Annihilation of Hellfire
Questioner: Esteemed Shaykh, what is the ruling on one who says of Ibn al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy on him, regarding the issue of (audio unclear)?
Ibn al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy on him, suspended judgment regarding the Fire; he did not commit to anything. He researched the issue extensively, then said — and these are his exact words: "If it is said: where has your footing come to rest in this tremendous issue, which is greater than this world and all it contains? It is said: at His statement, exalted is He, 'Indeed, your Lord is the Doer of whatever He wills.'" This is the statement of Ibn al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy on him; he did not commit to anything in this issue.
Questioner: Yes — so Shaykh Ibn al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy on him, did not declare a preferred view on the issue in his book?
No, no — he did not declare a preference. But [one must understand] the nature of Ibn al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy on him; a person must know the nature of a scholar. When Ibn al-Qayyim researches an issue and sets out the first view, it is as though he were championing it — out of the excellence of his reasoning, his fairness, and his justice — and he mentions for its proponents evidences that the proponents of that view do not themselves know. Then, when he mentions the other view, he mentions for them evidences that they too do not know, as though he were championing it. And yet, when he had mentioned the evidences of both parties, he said — and this is his explicit statement — "If it is said: where has your footing come to rest in this issue, which is greater than this world and all it contains? It is said: at His statement, exalted is He, 'Indeed, your Lord is the Doer of whatever He wills.'"
