Rulings on Praying Seated on a Chair
Questioner: This matter has become widespread, and there are various cases: a person who can bow (ruku') only with difficulty but is still able to do so, a person who is unable except by using a chair, and a person who is able to prostrate but cannot rise afterward. What is the ruling regarding praying on a chair?
Those who pray on a chair generally believe that they have a valid excuse for doing so. The basic principle is that Allah, exalted is He, says, "And stand before Allah, devoutly obedient," and the Prophet ﷺ said, as established in Sahih al-Bukhari, "Pray standing" — this is obligatory upon the one who is able. So whoever prays an obligatory prayer sitting while able to stand, his prayer is invalid, because he has deliberately omitted a pillar of the prayer without a valid excuse. If a person is unable to stand, then the Prophet ﷺ said, "If you cannot, then sitting."
Some people say: I am able to stand, but once I sit down I am no longer able to rise again — and this is what has given rise to the present-day issue of praying seated on a chair. Such a person says: if I sit, I cannot rise, but if I pray on a chair, I am able to perform part of the obligatory actions. In the Sahihayn the Prophet ﷺ said, "When I command you to do something, do of it what you are able." So such a person, being able to perform some of the pillars, is obligated to perform what he is able of the prayer's pillars and is excused from what he is unable to do. But if we were to say that such a person should instead simply pray sitting on the ground, he would end up omitting all the pillars he was in fact capable of performing.
I would draw attention to a number of important points regarding praying on a chair. First: it is permissible when a person, if he were to prostrate, would be unable to rise again — in that case he is unable to stand at all, and since he is able to perform some of the obligatory actions, this is supported by the general meaning of the Prophet's ﷺ statement, "When I command you to do something, do of it what you are able." Second: the scholars hold that if a person prays on a chair, he should gesture with his head for the bowing (ruku') rather than merely leaning his back somewhat — gesturing with the head is the position of most of the scholars, and this is what was given as a ruling by 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar and others, as narrated from him by 'Abd al-Razzaq in al-Musannaf. The second view in the matter is that he inclines his back somewhat. The first view is more correct and closer to what is right, and is supported by the hadith of Ibn 'Umar in al-Bukhari, describing the Prophet's ﷺ prayer while riding, in which he would gesture with his head — meaning there is no need to bend the back at all.
A third matter: some of the common people have been observed raising something to the level of their prostration — placing something in front of their knees, then when bowing, gesturing toward it, and then prostrating upon it on the consideration that prostration on a raised object is superior to prostrating on the ground. This is a mistake. A report on this subject has come by way of Jabir prohibiting such a practice, though the correct position is that this report is a statement of Jabir himself (mawquf) rather than something raised to the Prophet ﷺ; in any case, this practice is contrary to the general principles of the Sharia and is a mistake. What is also related on this point, though likewise mawquf, is that in Sunan Abi Dawud it states that the hands should prostrate just as the face prostrates — so if the face does not prostrate, the hands should not prostrate either. Another related error is when a person, wishing to bow, places his hands on the ground, then when wishing to prostrate places something in front of him and gestures toward it without actually prostrating — this too is entirely mistaken.
The correct method is: he gestures with his head, his hands remaining upon his thighs, and he makes the prostration lower than the bowing by gesturing further with his head — the gesture for prostration should be lower than the gesture for bowing.
