The Authentic Forms of the Remembrance After the Prayer
[This was asked together with a question about the wording "He has succeeded, by his father"; see "He Has Succeeded, by His Father" and Swearing by Other Than Allah.]
Questioner: (audio unclear) the tashahhud ten times after the salam of the prayer — the tashahhud ten times.
Yes. As for the hadiths that came about the tashahhud ten times: these came [saying] that you say "Glory be to Allah" (subhan Allah) thirty-three [times], "Praise be to Allah" (al-hamdu lillah) thirty-three, "Allah is the Greatest" (Allahu akbar) thirty-three, "There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah" (la ilaha illa Allah), then you say ten times "There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah." This narration is weak; this narration is weak.
What is preserved from the Prophet ﷺ regarding the remembrances (adhkar) after every prayer is as follows:
The first: that you say "Glory be to Allah" thirty-three times, "Praise be to Allah" thirty-three, and "Allah is the Greatest" thirty-four. This is the first form.
The [second] form: that instead of [saying] the takbir thirty-four [times], you say "There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah" once, so it is thirty-three of each, and the completion of the hundred is "There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah." This form is the one well known among people today.
The third form: that you say thirty-three of each, without completing the hundred.
The fourth form: that you say ten of each.
The fifth: that you say "Glory be to Allah" twenty-five times, "Praise be to Allah" twenty-five, "Allah is the Greatest" twenty-five, and "There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah" twenty-five.
The sixth form is the one already mentioned, which is weak.
The seventh form — but it is also disputed in terms of its meaning, because it goes back to the same wordings we mentioned a little while ago; we preferred one narration over another — is that you say "Glory be to Allah, praise be to Allah, and Allah is the Greatest" so that [the total of] each one is thirty-three. According to whoever said (audio unclear) on this basis, each one is eleven. But this narration is not correct. What is correct is what I mentioned: that each one is thirty-three, the total of all being ninety-nine. These forms are established from the Prophet ﷺ.
