Questioner: Some people say, upon arriving at a place, "Allahumma anzilna manzilan mubarakan, wa anta khayru al-munzilin" (O Allah, settle us in a blessed lodging, and You are the best of those who provide lodging). Does this have a basis, O Shaykh?

Yes — some of the scholars have said this, deriving it from Allah's statement: "Say: My Lord, cause me to land at a blessed landing place, and You are the best to accommodate." But this is merely a scholarly derivation; no specific Sunnah has come with it from the Prophet ﷺ. The better approach, in matters like this which apply to specific circumstances, is to restrict oneself to what has actually been reported. General matters may be reasoned about by analogy, but if something is tied to a specific situation, time, or context, then there must be a specific text from the Prophet ﷺ for it.

It has been authentically reported that the Sunnah upon arriving somewhere is a different remembrance. Whenever the Prophet ﷺ arrived at a new lodging — whether in open land or elsewhere — he said: "Whoever arrives at a lodging and says, 'I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He created,' nothing will harm him" — until he departs, in another wording, until he moves on — "from that lodging."
