Ruling on Narrating a Weak Hadith to the Common Peopleحكم ذكر الحديث الضعيف عند العامة

Questioner: Is it permissible to mention a weak hadith simply to draw on it for encouragement or illustration?

Yes, a student of knowledge may mention a weak hadith for that purpose, but this differs depending on the audience. If he is speaking to ordinary people who are unfamiliar with the terminology of hadith sciences, they may take the weak report and use it as a proof without realizing it is weak — the layman does not understand the meaning of the word "weak"; if you tell him "this is weak," he may assume this means the hadith is fabricated, and ask, "then why are you telling me about it? Why mention it at all?" — he simply does not grasp these technical terms. So it is better not to narrate to laypeople except what is established, and to say to them, instead of "weak," "this has not been established," meaning the Prophet ﷺ did not say it.

As for a weak hadith mentioned in support of an already-established authentic hadith, scholars have always continued to mention weak hadiths in that supporting capacity. Weak hadiths are of two kinds: one whose weakness is agreed upon — this may never be mentioned [as evidence] at all; and one whose weakness is disputed, such that some scholars consider it weak while others consider it authentic — this is a lesser matter than the first, since here another scholar simply disagrees with you in his assessment, and no one should be condemned for relying on it, since he may believe it to be authentic while you believe it to be weak. This disagreement should never be turned into a dispute between people, as some do when they hunt for the mistakes of scholars and correct them on every matter of scholarly judgment — this reflects a flawed methodology, since disagreement in authenticating or weakening a hadith is a matter of legitimate scholarly effort (ijtihad) that does not warrant categorical condemnation, so long as each opinion has a recognized basis among its adherents.
