Examining the Chain of the Hadith 'A Man From the People of Paradise Will Now Come to You'دراسة إسناد حديث: يطلع عليكم الآن رجل من أهل الجنة

Regarding the hadith, "A man from the people of Paradise is about to come to you" — narrated by Imam Ahmad in his Musnad through al-Zuhri, from Anas, with an isnad that appears sound at first glance — many scholars have authenticated this report based on its apparent chain. However, on closer examination and by gathering the various chains of transmission, it becomes clear that the report is defective (ma'lul), and that al-Zuhri did not hear this particular report directly from Anas. In some of its transmissions, al-Zuhri says, "I was informed [by someone] from Anas," which shows that al-Zuhri did not hear it directly from him, making the report disconnected (munqati').

Those who authenticated it relied on another narration in which al-Zuhri explicitly states that he heard from Anas in general — meaning that al-Zuhri did, broadly speaking, hear hadith from Anas; al-Zuhri was born in the year 50 AH, and Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, died in the year 93 AH, so al-Zuhri lived alongside him for forty-three years and heard from him — this much is beyond dispute among the scholars of hadith. But by gathering all the chains of transmission for this specific report, it becomes clear that al-Zuhri did not hear this particular hadith from Anas directly. So while al-Zuhri's hearing from Anas is sound in general, this specific hadith is weak, defective due to its disconnection.
