The Ruling and Levels of Boycotting (Hijran) a Sinner
Boycotting sinners is not of a single type but has different levels. One level is to boycott someone's company — so that if you meet him on the road you greet him and shake his hand, but do not sit with him; this is one form of boycotting. A second level is that you sit with him but do not speak to him — as with a man who boycotts his wife: he sleeps in the same house but does not speak to her, or boycotts her without expelling her from the home, considering this a means and method of reform. One may also see it fit to combine both — neither sitting with the person nor speaking to him. The purpose in every case is reform; the moment a person believes that boycotting is no longer serving as a path to reform, he should abandon it, since the entire purpose is to correct the person's wrongdoing and the harm it causes.
There is also another benefit intended by the Lawgiver in boycotting: demonstrating to others that a particular matter is wrong and forbidden. If everyone simply sat with an innovator or an open sinner without taking any visible stance, people might assume that this person is not actually an innovator, since so-and-so sits with him, without knowing his true intention — so publicly showing the boycott prevents this kind of confusion (fitnah) from arising. Furthermore, the one enacting the boycott may himself benefit from it, and the purpose is not only to benefit others: first, it demonstrates loyalty and disavowal (wala' wa bara'); and second, it protects his own methodology and the soundness of his religion, since sitting with the people of innovation may itself expose him to trial and confusion.
