The Difference Between the People of Narration (Riwayah) and the People of Comprehension (Dirayah)

Riwayah is transmission and preservation — one who possesses it is called "a person of riwayah," meaning one skilled in transmitting, memorizing, and precisely preserving texts. Dirayah, on the other hand, belongs to the people of understanding and jurisprudential insight (fiqh). Both groups have their own ranks, each according to what Allah has granted him of the ability for riwayah or for dirayah, and a person should strive earnestly to combine both, for memorizing a hadith is one thing, and knowing its subtle defects ('ilal) is another.

If a person combines both — precise memorization and knowledge of hidden defects — he is called "a possessor of both riwayah and dirayah." If he only preserves the wording of hadith without understanding its jurisprudential implications, he is called "a possessor of riwayah," meaning one who precisely preserves the text, though if he has some understanding as well there is no harm in also calling him a possessor of dirayah; but riwayah alone does not suffice — dirayah, meaning mastery of the subtle defects and of the fiqh, is also necessary.

A person may also possess dirayah without riwayah, such as a jurist who is not a hadith scholar. Such a person is called "a possessor of dirayah," not "a possessor of riwayah," because he does not narrate with a chain of transmission, nor does he distinguish between authentic and weak hadith; so he is said to be of the people of dirayah, not of the people of riwayah.
